Physics 137A/B - Quantum Mechanics

Physics 137A/B is a series of two quantum mechanics courses which are both prerequisites for Astro C161 (only Physics 137A is listed as a prerequisite for Astro 160). Physics 137A provides a general overview of quantum mechanics and how to solve the Schrodinger equation, as well as aspects of spin and angular momentum. Then, Physics 137B covers several applications of the methods learned in 137A. Linear algebra will be VERY relevant and frequently used in these courses. The standard textbook used for both of these courses is Introduction to Quantum Mechanics by David Griffiths.

As a whole, quantum mechanics is a generally useful skill that provides a stronger fundamental understanding for many concepts in astrophysics. Furthermore, the mathematical background and techniques are widely applicable in astrophysics. Make sure to pay attention to WKB methods, spherical harmonics, special functions, and Fourier transforms.
